Orthodontics

Why begin orthodontic treatment?

The orthodontic treatment aims at correcting the wrong position of the teeth, the jaws between them or the teeth with respect to the jaws, to find an optimal dentition on two levels:

  • Aesthetic plan: by aligning teeth, jaws, and lips, orthodontic treatment improves the appearance of your smile and contributes to better self-esteem.
  • Functional plan: Orthodontic treatment will help prevent cavities, gum and bone diseases, tooth loss, teeth fractures, speech and breathing problems, and masticatory difficulties. In addition, well-aligned teeth make it easier to brush and help to acquire good hygiene habits.

At what age can orthodontic treatment be performed?

At any age! Orthodontics is not just for children. Adult orthodontics is more complex and complicated but it is no less effective. On the other hand, it is no longer reimbursed by the social security system beyond 16 years. The aesthetic disadvantages always scare a little more in adulthood, but know that there are now very discrete devices.

Is it painful?

Orthodontic treatment involves a tooth displacement, which can cause inflammation. The patient may sometimes feel a slight discomfort. If there is pain, it is present at the beginning of the treatment and is lessened after a week. To remedy this, taking analgesics for a few days (paracetamol …) is the most suitable solution.

Which type of device?

It is up to your orthodontist to offer you the solution most suited to your need according to the origin of the disorders to be corrected. There are 2 categories of devices: Removable appliances are used to correct minor teething defects Not being worn 24/24, their effectiveness is less. Despite everything, they require great discipline as they must be worn more than 20 hours a day to achieve results. There are even transparent removable devices (grooves covering the teeth).

Fixed appliances are commonly used: brackets, brackets or brackets commonly referred to as rings are glued to the teeth. They are used to correct the orientation of each tooth in all directions. Very regularly, the arches are reactivated by small elastic pieces by your orthodontist to increase the action on the teeth. The boxes (brackets or consoles) can be:

  • Metal: These are the least expensive and most used boxes they are also slightly less bulky and therefore more comfortable than ceramics.
  • Ceramic: they are transparent, glued to the outer face of the teeth. More discreet, they are on the other hand more fragile and slightly more expensive. Lingual orthodontics is also a solution: they are boxes glued on the inside of the teeth, invisible but more expensive. They require perfect oral hygiene.

What oral hygiene gestures should be adopted?

Whether you are paired or not, it is essential to have good oral hygiene. However, wearing a device will make it a bit more difficult to maintain your teeth
We recommend that you buy a toothbrush suitable for orthodontic appliances and brush your teeth after each meal. In addition, it is necessary to pass inter-dental brushes under the l and along the glued boxes. You can also use a fluoride mouthwash in addition to brushing to rinse your mouth.
